Long long ago, there occurred to be ten suns in the sky which made the earth quite hot. The sea was dried-up, and the people were not able to live any more. This suffering alerted a hero called HouYi, who had a genius of archery. He climbed onto the KunLun Mountain and shot down the extra nine suns at one time. According to the great contribution he made to the world, HouYi was highly honored by the people. Many people came to learn from him, including a bad man named PengMeng
.
Before long, HouYi married a beautiful and kind girl with the name of ChangE. One day, HouYi went out to hunt, he met a Goddess who gave him a longevity drug. However, HouYi could not leave his wife alone, so he asked ChangE to help him to take care of it.A Few days later, HouYi led all his apprentices out to hunt. PengMeng lied that he had a stomach ache and did not join them. When everyone left, PengMeng came into the room of ChangE and bulled her into handing him the elixir. ChangE knew that she could not beard him, so she ate the elixir without hesitation in case PengMeng would got it. The moment she swallowed it she began to fly, out of the room and towards the sky. Because of her deep love towards her husband, she landed on the nearest star which is the moon. When her husband came back, he was too sorrowful to do anything.
From then on, people could see some shadows on the moon. They regard it as ChangE and a tree she planted. Many families gather together when the moon is full to memorize the brave woman. This is the origin of the Mid-autumn Day.
Thank you for your interesting story. Though I have learned it before, I like to read it again.
ReplyDeletethis is a classical story in China. But I think I have a different feeling when I read it in English. Traslation is not so easy.
ReplyDeleteFlying to the moon, is also our dream, and that story, keep in our mind forever.
