Narrative Essay

In China, we have learned how to write all kinds of essays in Chinese before. Now in Singapore, we learned how to write a narrative essay in English this week. Through a week’s study, I have found that there are some similarities and differences between Chinese and English.
First, both of them will need a hook to catch reader’s attention. However, it seems more important in English than Chinese. In Chinese, you can also begin with what happened, which is more direct. And it also helps people to get into the article more easily.
Then, I want to talk about how the essay is organized. In China, in order to catcher reader’s attention, you can tell the result first, and then you tell how it happened, which is called flashback. It is also a common writing skill. In English, I haven’t seen any other essay which uses flashback. Maybe people are more used to tell things in the order that it happened.
Although they have some differences, they are similar in general. They both have the introduction, body and conclusion. And they both need topic sentences. Sometimes thesis statement can give readers a general idea of the whole article.
To write a good narrative essay in English, we have a lot to learn. Maybe compare it with Chinese essays, and then we can learn it better and more quickly.Hope everyone can write good essays after these days' learning.
