The general facts of Vincent Van Gogh's life are nearly as well known as his paintings, which are some of the most popular images in the history of art. His paintings are sold for record-breaking prices today, but he was almost unknown in his own lifetime. Throughout his life, Van Gogh was "imbued with a strong sense of mission" in whatever field he pursued.
However, on July 27, 1890, he attempted suicide in a wheat field, shooting himself in the chest; he died two days later. His artistic legacy is preserved in the paintings and drawings he left behind, as well as in his voluminous correspondence, primarily with Theo, which lays bare his working methods and artistic intentions and serves as a reminder of his brother's pivotal role as a mainstay of support throughout his career.
By the time of his death in 1890, Van Gogh's works had begun to attract critical attention, and were also gradually regarded as "the most striking" in the show. By the outbreak of World War I, with the discovery of his genius by the Fauves and German Expressionists, Vincent van Gogh had already come to be regarded as a vanguard figure in the history of modern art.
"Mr. Vincent, impressionist painter, works in the night, as we are assured, in the glow of the gas lanterns on one of our public places." This is how experts evaluated him. From his short but magical life, we can see his constant pursue of art, a kind of pure genuine art, which is far from the vanity, bustle and snobbery of the outside world. He never stopped struggling or fighting, even the last time of his life. But life itself was really tough, and reality was always too far away from his ideal dream at that time. So after long time's struggle, he gradually found himself not accepted or recongined by people. His dream finally came into nothing, and his effort was all in vain. He had no choice but to finish his life.
Looking back at the long history, we can always find that genuine can hardly get along with the real world. It only exists in someone's dreams to some extend, and this very person who has this dream is a genuine art himself, just like Van Gogh.
The genius always suffered a lot. It's written. Gods also envied their talents. Van Gogh is such a genius.

ReplyDeleteVan Gogh is my also favorite artist. I admire him not only because of his wonderful art works but also his pure and kind heart. Though his own life is suffering, he still has an extreme passion towards life and has great compassion on human beings. I think only the man who has the most beautiful heart can produce such most wonderful works!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes genius is lonely because his ideas are so deep and different that they cannot be understood by ordinary people. But in the end, he choose to end his own life instead of doing anything harm to those ingnorant people. Do you still think that his suicide suggests his hatred towards world?
Let us be wiser to accept geniuses who are different from us!
The great men are always lonely.They cannont be understood by commoners easily.they are the sad ones. However, the reason is not because of their talence,but for their differences. It is really diffcult for human to accept the differences without discrimination.
